Excerpt from the Preface
Thomas W. Ellis (1865-1955) and Isabella Cochrane (1869-1933) are at the centre of this history and scrapbook, including their ancestors—most of whom came from Ireland—their siblings, some cousins, and descendants. Thomas was the grandson of Squire William Ellis (1776-1848) and Martha Elliot (c. 1766- 1861), who emigrated from County Cavan, Ireland, in 1804, settling first in Pennsylvania, and then Canada in 1810. In Canada, they bought lot 10 conc. 2 near Hespeler in Waterloo Township. Thomas was the son of William and Martha's son David Ellis (1811-1898) and his second wife Ann Winter (1825-1904), who was born in England and emigrated with her family at age 10. David also settled and farmed in Waterloo Township. Several of David and Ann Ellis's sons came to Minto and Normanby (adjacent to Minto) Townships, in Wellington and Grey Counties respectively, to farm. Thomas began farming [in Minto] in 1887. He married Isabella Cochrane in 1891.
Isabella was the youngest child of Robert Cochrane (1827-1905) and Sarah Strong (1825-1912), who emigrated from County Cavan, Ireland, in 1849 and by 1857 settled [...] in Minto Township, Wellington County. This farm became known as Valley Home Farm or Valleyhome Farm. Robert's brothers James (1836–1922) and George (1840–1899), and two Cochranes who were probably cousins—Thomas (1838–1927) and Samuel (1840–1903)—may have emigrated with him and Sarah. James settled next door [...]. By 1879, Robert and Sarah had finished construction of the large stone house that still stands on [the farm they homesteaded].
By 1899 Tom and Isabella were working the Cochrane farm and on Christmas Eve, 1902, they bought it and raised a large family there. Isabella passed away in 1933. In 1935, Tom married Nellie Louise Parker (1880–1953), who lived near his daughter Mildred (Ellis) Christopher in Guelph, and continued to farm. In December of 1954, he retired to Mildred (Ellis) and Ernest Christopher's home at 178 Yorkshire St., Guelph, and sold the farm to Mildred and Ernest's daughter—his grand-daughter—Mary Louise (Christopher) Auger and her husband R. Barrie Auger.
This book aims to gather together genealogical information and family history relevant to the descendants of those who lived on or near the Cochrane homestead. There is much here that will be of interest to descendants, not only of Robert and Sarah Cochrane, but descendants of Robert's brother James, and those of relatives who moved to western Canada and the United States—as did George, Thomas, and Samuel; and, of course, the numerous related Ellis families of Waterloo, Minto, and Normanby Townships.
